Portraits of people are for me a way of capturing as much as possible of the subject’s personality as well as their physical appearance. I like them to be in a particular setting or with objects of significance. My subjects are people in action rather than still sitters. As with the portraits I’ve been doing of crafts people they develop from watching and recording a person in motion to find a particular movement and expression that reveals the depth of their personality. I usually start with black and white and coloured pencil drawings before moving on to a painting.
